Our committee

Mary Dorney

My husband Graham and I have been diving since 1991 when we first joined the Harwich Scuba Diving Club within which we progressed our training and experience over many dive trips in the UK and abroad and became qualified Dive Leaders.

We both joined Sudbury Scuba BSAC Club in 2016 and I gained my Assistant Instructor qualification in 2018. In 2019 I was elected Chairperson of the Club.

For me, Scuba Diving is not just an enjoyable hobby, it has given me some of the most memorable experiences of my life and an invaluable insight into the underwater world and consequently a desire to do what I can to protect the planet both above and below the water line.

Dive Officer

Graham Pearce

I first did a try dive at school back in the mid 70’s as part of a Life Saving Club I belonged to, but I never pursued it, doing some snorkelling was as far as I ventured.

After a try dive while on a family holiday I got the diving bug, joined Sudbury Scuba Club in August 2009 and began my Ocean Diver course.  My first Open water dive in September 2009 at Gildenburg Water was followed by sea dives under the pier at Swanage and in the bay.

I became a Sports diver in 2010 and Dive Leader in 2017, my diving has been predominately UK based with more recently, holiday dives in warmer waters.

I completed the instructor foundation course enabling me to instruct under the supervision of a qualified instructor, I hope to work towards the theory and practical instructor qualifications in due course.

I was Chairman of SSC from 2012 to 2014 and also took on the role of temp Secretary for a while, I am now the Diving Officer, overseeing the safe diving activities within the club.

More overseas diving would be good, but also to experience more of what the UK has to offer.

The social side of SSC and the camaraderie on dive trips is great, there is always lots to learn and we are fortunate to have some very experienced and enthusiastic members in the club, always willing to pass on their knowledge and experiences.

Tina Boyes

I joined the club in 2015 along with my husband Tim. After retiring we were looking for something we could do together which also had a social side to it. Soon after completing my Ocean Diver course I joined the committee as secretary, immersing myself well and truly in club life.

I have made many friends and enjoyed lots of dry night activities throughout the years, although our weekly 'lockdown quiz' has been something I especially look forward to.

In 2019 I started training for my Sports Diver qualification and with the support of our training officer completed this in July 2020.

Training Officer

Graham Dorney

My wife Mary and I have been diving since 1991 when we first joined the Harwich Scuba Diving Club within which we progressed our training and experience over many dive trips in the UK and abroad and became qualified Dive Leaders.

We both joined Sudbury Scuba BSAC Club in 2016 after which I decided that I would like to take a more active part in diver training. I first gained my Assistant Instructor and then went on to full Open Water Instructor qualifications. In 2017 I was elected Training Officer for the Club.

Now, with the invaluable assistance of the expanding Club’s Instructor and Dive Leader team, I am thoroughly enjoying organising and running the training of our Diver Trainees. As a Club we are well positioned to extend the training and experience of new and existing club members.

Mary and I continue to thoroughly enjoy our UK and overseas diving, especially when it is part of a Club trip as it is always great fun, and even better when you get to share these experiences with friends who share a common passion for diving.

Long ago, on a holiday in Lanzarote I took the offer of a free ‘suck and see’ sample of scuba equipment in the pool at the hotel I was staying in. I was immediately hooked. I then had a full ‘Try Dive’ in the ocean – I was amazed at how wonderful the underwater environment was. Upon returning home, I was able to join a BSAC club at RAF Honington, training to become a ‘Club Diver’ in 2000 with open water dives at Gildenburgh Water.

My diving history then became ‘holiday diving’, which included more diving in The Canaries, Egypt, and Turkey. Whilst diving in Turkey, I switched brands to SSI, and qualified as a ‘Master Diver’ and completed various modules including ‘Stress and Recue’.

Whilst serving in the Army Reserve, I had the opportunity to train to become a Dive Leader. I had to cross back to BSAC (all British Military diving is under BSAC regulations) so I joined Sudbury Scuba Club. My interest in UK diving was started – Diving in Plymouth in October 2017 was fantastic. The sea life was amazing, such an enjoyable course.

I decided to give something back to the club, and trained to become an Assistant Diving Instructor in March 2018, and I am due to complete my Open Water Instructor course in September 2020.

My Fiancée is also a keen scuba diver, and she qualified as an Ocean Diver 2018.

I like all sorts of diving, from diving with sharks in the Maldives, wreck diving in the UK and I do enjoy instructing.

Equipment Officer

Tim Boyes

I had a try dive with Sudbury Scuba Club back in 2015 and really enjoyed both the diving and the welcome given by the club members, so signed up for the Ocean Diver course with my wife, Tina.

The training included trips to inland dive sites and to Swanage in Dorset, which was very enjoyable both for the experience and for getting to know others in the club. The volunteer instructors for the club were very supportive and we qualified in 2016, in time to dive Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. This was amazing and made the training in the somewhat cooler (!) British water all the more worthwhile.

As Equipment Officer I’ve enjoyed getting involved in the running of the club and it has been great to see the club grow in numbers over the years. I also maintain the club website.

After numerous trips with the club to UK sites and Egypt, Malta and Lanzarote, I was ready to progress to Sports Diver level, which (at the time of writing) I have now almost completed.

I’m looking forward to diving as Tina’s buddy here and abroad, plus more trips with the club whenever the opportunity arises!
